Five weird gadgets of CES 2014
Intel Mimo Baby
This one is not exactly a product. Instead, Mimo Baby is something that shows off a product - an tiny Intel processor called Edison that is capable of powering sensors which can monitor a baby and relay the information to parents. The clothes Mimo Baby is wearing has two green stripes that senses how it the baby is breathing. There is also a tiny square box with more sensors inside. It clips to clothes.
The information these sensors collect can be seen on a smartphone, which means even if parents are not around they can keep an eye on the position of baby, how it is breathing and if it sleeping or rolling around. Potentially, the sensors in Mimo Baby's clothes can also connect to smart coffee mugs - Intel displayed prototype - which can show sad or happy smileys depending on how the baby is feeling.
Kolibree Bluetooth toothbrush
Yes, there is Bluetooth in humble toothbrush now! Kolibree's newest toothbrush can connect to an app in your smartphone and relay the data it collects while you brush your teeth. But what's the point? Well, until now you don't know how well you are brushing your teeth. You spent five minutes rubbing the brush against your teeth, but did you follow the right procedure?
This connected toothbrush tells you how you are brushing. Are you doing an A grade job or just managing C? This brush will tell you. The app accompanying the brush will also tell people the correct way to clean their teeth and improve their grades.
LG chatty fridges and washing machines
Did you forget how many eggs you ate last week? Don't worry, you can ask your refrigerator, if you get the one LG showed at CES 2014. This fridge will tell you how many remaining eggs are there in its eggs compartment. But the smart fridge is not only appliance that can talk back to a user through a SMS.
LG's latest washing machine too can send a user a message when it is finished with laundry. Of course, to talk to your appliances you will require a smartphone and will have to use an app called HomeChat. We are sure that LG is well-meaning in its idea around HomeChat but we think picking up the phone and calling someone who is at home to find out how much milk is left is likely more convenient than asking the refrigerator.
Elektra Nails
This one is for ladies who like to keep long nails. The problem is that if you have long nails they may create problem when you are using a touchscreen phone.
The phone's capacitive touchscreen doesn't recognize the touch from nails because there is no electricity charge in them unlike the skin, which can conduct electricity. Solution? You can wear Elektra Nails, which are fake nails but built of material that can conduct electricity. These nails feel just like natural nails and you can even apply nail polish on them.
Mother
Built by Sen.se, mother is a small doll like appliance that can connect to a Cookie, a separate product by the same company. A Cookie has motion and temperature sensors. It can be attached to doors or objects. Or you can simply place several Cookies around the house. These Cookies then connect to Mother using Wi-Fi.
Here is an example of how Mother can be used to monitor you house. You can place a Cookie on your door and connect it to Mother. Every time door opens or closes, Mother will get to know about it and in turn will inform you.
