Wipro veteran Anand Sankaran joins Dell
Anand
Sankaran, who quit Wipro earlier this month, has joined Dell Services
as its president and global head of its infrastructure and cloud
computing business.
Suresh Vaswani, head of
Dell's services business, told TOI that infrastructure services was one
of the larger businesses within Dell Services and Sankaran would be
leading a team of about 10,000 people.
"He is extremely well suited to this role," he said.
Sankaran
was a senior vice president and head of global infrastructure services
at Wipro at the time he quit. He was with Wipro for 24 years and was
made head of the infrastructure services business in 2011. The business
constitutes nearly a third of Wipro's revenues.
Sankaran
and Vaswani had a long association in Wipro. Vaswani too was in Wipro
for 25 years and was its joint CEO when he quit to join Dell in 2011.
Sankaran
said he was excited to be in Dell. "It will be a challenging and
interesting opportunity. Dell has strong capabilities around technology
in infrastructure services, and has geo-presence and scale that few can
match. It provides infrastructure services for small companies,
mid-market and large enterprises. So I believe we can shake up the
infrastructure business," he said. Sankaran holds a Bachelor degree in
engineeringthe Karnataka Regional Engineering College.
Dell
is a $57 billion revenue company, and its services business accounts
for $8.5 billion. Vaswani said he could not disclose the contribution
made by the infrastructure services and cloud computing business. "We'll
be deeply investing in this business. And our objective, unlike most IT
service vendors, would not be to only outsource a company's
infrastructure services, but would be also to migrate the infrastructure
to a future state, so that it creates a very different customer
experience," he said.
He said Dell would be
able to do that also because of its traditional expertise in end-user
devices, and the server, storage and networking business.
