Hillary Clinton made a stinging joke about Trump's mysterious "covfefe" tweet

Image
RANCHO PALOS VERDES, California - Even Hillary Clinton had a zinger about "covfefe." The apparent typo word, embedded in a middle-of-the night tweet by President Trump, was the joke of the day on Wednesday online and across the nation. No less so here at the Code Conference, an annual gathering of the tech industry elite. During her appearance at the conference, Clinton talked about Russia's alleged attempts to influence last year's election to Trump's benefit. That's when she got in her "covfefe" barb. "I think it was a hidden message to the Russians," she said. The audience, largely made up of people who supported her in the election, laughed. Trump got the ball rolling on "covfefe" last night when he wrote in a since-deleted tweet, "Despite the constant negative press covfefe". The tweet immediately went viral, and an internet meme was born. Trump himself even poked fun at his apparent typo, writing in a

Dylan Field is the co-founder and chief executive of  Figma , a cross-platform design and collaboration tool. Before starting Figma, Dylan interned at LinkedIn, Flipboard, and O’Reilly Media. You know design is having its moment when IBM, the stodgy normcore dad of the tech industry,  gets in on the action . In the last five years, Big Blue has grown its designer to developer hiring target from 1:72 to 1:9. It’s not the only one — companies across Silicon Valley are recruiting far more designers than ever before. I’ve been hearing about this hiring crunch for years, ever since we  started Figma . The stats We wanted to put some hard numbers behind the trend, so we reached out to our network. We gathered the stats on six companies’ designer:developer ratios in 2017, and how it compares to half a decade ago. The growth is staggering — enough so that the venture firm Kleiner Perkins decided to include the data in their Internet Trends report. As you can see below, companies

IoT brings us the future (and a whole lot of problems)

Image
A lot’s changed in the past decade. We’ve seen the rise of smartphones. Self-driving cars are on their way. The internet, and connectivity in general, are faster and more extensive than ever before. As you’re probably aware, this has all come to be known as the Internet of Things. A wave of technological advancements that are combining to connect more and more aspects of our lives to the internet. Now we have  smart washing machines . We have  LED lighting installations  that improve office productivity and set the mood at home. Hell, our TVs are even collecting and sharing personal data (and sometimes  spying on us ?). Unsurprisingly, these recent technological wonders surrounding the IoT revolution come with their fair share of complications. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most prescient issues. How big will it get? Everyone’s favorite question to forget asking at the reptile store. Looking at you, regret-filled iguana owners. How many devices are we ex

Karan Bajaj & Hitesh Raj Bhagat show you how to get started. CREATING VIDEOS Most experts agree that devices purpose-built for video (video cameras, DSLRs, prosumer cameras) can capture better video than smartphones. However, they are not always easy to carry and not as versatile when it comes to instant connectivity. This is where smartphones play an important role -the connected nature of a phone means that you can do a lot more than just capture video. India is definitely the world's next major tech market, says Internet Trends Report

Image
If there’s been any doubt about India being the next major target market for tech businesses, Kleiner Perkins partner Mary Meeker’s latest  Internet Trends Report  should make that clear as day. The report, which spans 355 pages, dedicates 55 pages solely to the state of internet and mobile access in India. The first major takeaway is that the country now has 355 million internet users, which amounts to roughly 27 percent of the population of 1.3 billion people. That’s up from 277 million in 2015. Credit:  Kleiner Perkins Chalk that up to the falling prices of smartphones and mobile data. The average cost of a handset is now far more affordable than a decade ago, having dropped from about $270 in 2007 to under $150 in 2016, and from over 25 percent of per capita GDP down to 8 percent. Credit:  Kleiner Perkins Data plans are now half what they cost in 2014 – and India has major conglomerate Reliance to thank for that. The company’s  Jio carrier launched last September  with l

Demonetisation hits government IT spending

Image
The government is forecast to spend $7.8 billion on IT in 2017 -- a 7.5 percent increase from 2016. There will be a 2 per cent drop in the Indian government's IT spending this year due to demonetisation and a drop in industrial production, market research firm Gartner said on Thursday. The government is forecast to spend $7.8 billion on IT in 2017 -- a 7.5 percent increase from 2016. However, this is down from Gartner's projection of 9.5 percent growth this year. "The 2 percent revision in our outlook is primarily due to the effects of demonetisation and a drop in industrial production," Moutusi Sau, principal research analyst at Gartner, said in a statement. "However, spending plans like affordable housing scheme and increased loans to small and medium enterprises by the government are likely to have a positive effect on IT spending in the next few quarters," Sau added. Trump administration approves tougher visa vetting, including social media checks

Image
The Trump administration has rolled out a new questionnaire for US visa applicants worldwide that asks for social media handles for the last five years and biographical information going back 15 years. The new questions, part of an effort to tighten vetting of would-be visitors to the United States, was approved on May 23 by the Office of Management and Budget despite criticism from a range of education officials and academic groups during a public comment period. Critics argued that the new questions would be overly burdensome, lead to long delays in processing and discourage international students and scientists from coming to the United States. Under the new procedures, consular officials can request all prior passport numbers, five years' worth of social media handles, email addresses and phone numbers and 15 years of biographical information including addresses, employment and travel history. Officials will request the additional information when they determine &quo

Layoffs scare is real, not exaggerated, finds ET's Jobs Disruption survey

Image
Job creation has been the biggest economic problem for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had promised to create one crore  jobs  before coming to power. As if lagging private investment wasn't enough, demonetisation only added to that problem. Now, widespread  layoffs  in the private sector have set off a scare among workers. Before Larsen & Toubro, India’s biggest engineering firm, fired 14,000 employees, or 11.2% of its total workforce, in November last year, mostly startups made headlines for layoffs. Demonetisation brought layoffs to manufacturing and construction too. This year there was a spate of layoffs in the information technology (IT) sector as Cognizant, Wipro, Infosys and Tech Mahindra pruned their working force. Yet, many in the government and private sector deny that  job losses  are a trend. Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told ET that the current situation had been exaggerated. "Some performance-related routine trimming is an integral part o
